When Richard Dale High was born on January 3, 1950, in McPherson, Kansas, his father, Leland, was 27 and his mother, Helen, was 24. He married Mary Jane Smrcka on June 24, 1972, in Plainville, Kansas. They had three children during their marriage. He has three sisters.
