Robert Germain

Robert Germain was born in 1639, son of Julien Germain and Julienne Bevais, in the borough of Londay-l'Abbey, diocese of Le Mans, Normandy. He married Marie-Catherine Coignart in Quebec on October 29, 1669 (Duquet contract, October 14, 1669). Marie-Catherine Coignart (a King's Daughter) was born in 1643, daughter of François Coignart and Françoise Petit of Rouen, Normandy. All their children were baptized in Quebec.

On March 20, 1667 (Becquet Clerk's Office), Robert received a concession of Seigneur Bourdon in the seigneury of Dombourg, the region where he spent the major part of his life and where it seems, he died; the date is uncertain, but later than 1713. The census of 1681 indicates his family continued t live in the same seigneury. Robert's trade is that of a shoe-maker; he is 42 years old and his wife is 38; their children are Marie (10 years), Jean (8), Henry (7), Anne (5), Antoine (3), and Robert (2). The family owns a rifle, two horned cattle, and sixteen arpents of land under cultivation.

Notaries Pierre Duquet, Romain Becquet, and Gilles Rageot registered some acts in the name of this pioneer between 1667 and 1686, but it is at the Clerk's Office of Louis Chambalon that he mainly did business at the turn of the 17th century and the 18th century. On March 28, 1697, François de Chaaavigny of Chevrotiere granted him 6 arpents of frontage land, by 40 in depth, in his seigneury. At the same time he offered 3 arpents to Henry, son of Robert, who had taken up residence in Portneuf. This land faced the river and his neighbors on one side are named Cinq-Mars. The land in back had not yet been granted or "conceded".

On March 16, 1707, Robert, who soon would reach his 70th year, started to split up his properties for the benefit of his sons. Antoine received 3 arpents of frontage, by 40 in depth, locatd in the seigneury of Portneuf, adjoining and owned by François Mercure to the northeast and by François Juniac (Gignac) on the southeast, with a house, furniture, cattle, and farm equipment. Robert had received this concession from Mr. de Becancour 24 years before, on May 3, 1683 (Clerk's Office, François Genaple). For their part, Robert and Alexis, who had remained in Grondines, received from their parents 8 arpents of frontage land, by 40 deep. Their neighbor to the southeast was Jacques Gribnon and to the northeast was Pierre Lescuyer. However, the giver declared that he still had not received title to the aforementioned dwelling.

On June 24, 1702 (Clerk's Office, Roy Chatellerault [Michel Roy dit Chatellerault]), Robert Germain from Portneuf, and Alexis Sauvageau from Saint-Charles-des-Roches (Grondines)came to an agreement in connection with the sale of a house with 4 arpents of frontage, by 40 deep, located this last place and sold on March 15, 1700 by Jacques Custo to Jean-Baptiste Germain.

On February 25, 1712 (Clerk's Office, François Trotain), Robert sold to Jean Trotie, from Grondines, a concession of 4 arpents that he had received from the Seigneur Louis Hamelin.

Lastly, on June 14, 1713 (Clerk's Office), the Germain-Coignart couple sold a dwelling and 4 arpents located in the same seigneury to François Lemelin. It is thus to say that on this last date, Robert and Marie-Catherine were still alive, but they were both more than 70 years old.

In his dictionary, Mgr Tanguay reported that some of the children of Henry, the son, will get married under the name of Belisle.

Robert Germain and Marie Coignart had 5 sons: Jean Baptist (1673, Henry (1675),Antoine (1678), Robert (1680), and Alexis (1682), and 2 daughters: zmstir Madeleine (1670), and Anne (1676).
