Interesting Facts

  • When Georgia was founded in 1732, it included much of the present-day states of Alabama and Mississippi.
  • Blackbeard Island was named for the famous pirate, Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, who raided merchant ships in the area. Following the 1876 yellow fever epidemic, the South Atlantic Quarantine Station opened on the island to screen ships bound for U.S. southern Atlantic ports, and quarantine passengers and crew, and disinfect ships carrying disease.

Georgia Census Research

Although earlier censuses were taken, the 1820 census is the earliest federal enumeration to survive for the state of Georgia. However, Franklin, Rabun and Twiggs counties are missing from the 1820 census, and other counties are sometimes unreliable or unreadable. The remaining censuses are mostly complete, and are available for each census year except for 1890, which includes only Muscogee County.

Various state censuses exist on a fragmented basis for many counties in Georgia. Tax lists and other sources are often necessary to serve as substitutes for early censuses, and in between federal censuses. A 1790 census has been created from tax lists for much of the state.

George Vital Records

Birth and death records began on a statewide level in 1919. Compliance was not considered extensive until 1928. Records before that time were kept on a county basis, and vary from county to county. Marriage records are the most complete, available from the 1700s on in most areas, but also vary from county to county.

Georgia Research Resources

The organizations listed below provide information about Georgia history and genealogy. In addition to these state-level resources, many counties and towns maintain important genealogical collections in local libraries, genealogical societies, or historical societies, so check for a local resource when researching.

  • Georgia Archives: Holds a large collection of state and local government records, and sponsors the digital archive “Georgia’s Virtual Vault”  Some highlights of this rich collection of scanned images of historical documents include deed and will books from selected counties; Confederate pension applications, oaths, and discharge papers; county tax digests; Spanish-American War service summary cards; and headright and bounty land plats. Other important document collections including Confederate muster rolls and selected legislative documents are available from the Digital Records page.
  • Georgia Historical Society: Publishes the journal Georgia Historical Quarterly and the newsmagazine Georgia History Today. The Society’s Library in Savannah also maintains a large collection of publications, many of which are of interest to genealogists.
