Southern Italian (Piterà) and Greek (Piteras): occupational name from medieval Greek piteras ‘bran merchant’, or pitaras, ‘maker of pita bread’ or ‘pie maker’ from pita ‘flat bread’, ‘pie’ + the occupational suffix -as.
