Portuguese and Spanish: from the personal name Nolasco, derived from the name of Petrus Nolascus (Saint Peter of Nolasco), who was born in Carcassone in 1189 and died in Barcelona in 1256, where he was co-founder and leader of the order of S. Maria della Mercede ‘Our Lady of Ransom’, known in English as the Mercedarians.
