South German: habitational name from a place on the Neckar river, or a topographic name for someone living on or by a prominence, from an agent derivative of Nock ‘hill(top)’, ‘rock’. Dutch (de Nekker) and North German: from Middle Dutch, Middle Low German necker ‘watersprite’, ‘goblin’, ‘devil’, hence a nickname for someone thought to resemble a goblin in some way.
