German and English: from Middle High Germanmaser, Middle English maser ‘maple-wood bowl’ (Old French masere, of Germanic origin), hence a metonymic occupational name for a wood-turner producing such ware. English: variant spelling of Macer, an occupational name for a mace-bearer, from Old French maissier, massier, a derivative of Old French masse ‘mace’. German (Maaser): pet form of Thomas.
