Perhaps an altered spelling of German Köhl (see Kohl). Indian (Maharashtra); pronounced as two syllables: Hindu descriptive nickname from Sanskrit kala ‘black’, found among Brahmans, Marathas, and other communities. The Konkanasth Brahmans have a clan called Kale.
