The placenames may derive from Old English hagu-thorn hæg-thorn ‘hawthorn’ + lēah ‘woodland clearing’ though the initial element may alternatively be hǣddre ‘heather’ or a derivative of hǣth ‘heath heather’ (such as hǣthor from hǣth + the noun suffix -or; see Heather ).
