Scottish (Fife): shortened form of Halkerston a habitational name from lands called Hawkerton in the Mearns (Kincardineshire) apparently held by the king's falconer and so probably derived from Older Scots hauker ‘one who trains and cares for a lord's hawks’ + toun ‘village settlement’.
