English (Kent): possibly from one of many places called Denton (e.g. near Alciston Sussex) one of six places called Dunton (Bedfordshire Buckinghamshire Essex Leicestershire Norfolk Warwickshire) or Downton (Gloucestershire Wiltshire) or Taunton (Somerset). The later Kentish surname may be connected with Danton Farm in Cheriton (Kent) this being a late form of the farm name Dalmington.
