As of early 2019, more than 26 million Americans have voluntarily engaged in genetic testing—a trend that is expected to continue or even accelerate over time. This means increasing numbers of people will be turning to a healthcare provider for help interpreting their genetic test results and planning a path forward to improve their health.
That’s why at Ancestry®, we’re focused on enabling access to evidence-based insights into personal genetic information that will empower people to initiate meaningful, productive conversations with a healthcare provider (HCP). This is how we believe we can best serve the growing demand for genetic testing, and ultimately help people use that information to make healthier choices in partnership with a healthcare provider.
Ancestry has partnered with PWNHealth, an independent clinician network comprised of board-certified physicians and genetic counselors1, to provide clinical oversight of AncestryHealth. Ancestry has also partnered with independent CLIA-certified laboratories that develop and perform the laboratory tests included in AncestryHealth.
AncestryHealth customer test requests are submitted to PWNHealth where each request is evaluated to determine eligibility. If a customer is eligible, a board-certified physician submits a test order to an independent CLIA-certified laboratory where the test is performed. After the test is performed, a board-certified laboratory director reviews and signs off on the test results and releases the laboratory report to a board-certified genetic counselor at PWNHealth. Laboratory reports are reviewed and results are released to the AncestryHealth online product experience.
All AncestryHealth customers have access to online genetic counseling resources developed by PWNHealth. These resources include an online tool to submit a question to a genetic counselor; webinars with real-time, confidential, one-to-one chat with a genetic counselor; on-demand educational videos; and one-on-one sessions with a genetic counselor, as appropriate. Access to these resources are provided to AncestryHealth customers as part of PWNHealth's services, whose fees are included in the overall price of the test.

As more and more people take DNA tests to gain insights into their health, healthcare providers will need current information to support patient understanding. That’s why we’ve partnered with UpToDate, the premier evidence-based resource for clinicians. Their educational resources can be used to support healthcare providers in interpreting genetic test results and translating that information for patients. Our goal in working with UpToDate is to empower healthcare professionals to have meaningful, actionable conversations with their patients.

In addition to their graduate training in medical genetics and counseling, all PWNHealth genetic counselors are board-certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and licensed in the states they serve.
