Hello Alexander researchers,

I'm looking for Alexanders of Frederickstown (or Frederick?), MD. Here is what I have so far. Can anyone help?

Supposedly seven Alexander brothers emigrated from Scotland to America with their minister. One came via Londonderry, Ireland with 3 sons.

They settled near Frederickstown, MD. Descendants include Prof. Archibald Alexander of Princeton Seminary and Prof. William Alexander at Presbyterian T.S. in S.F.

I can't find a Frederickstown in MD but there is a Frederick, Frederick Co., MD. I wonder if this is what is meant by Frederickstown in a book published in 1888.

Patrick ALEXANDER b.1740 Frederickstown, MD
....James ALEXANDER 1770 MD-1821 KY, m.1793 VA m. Mrs. Mary Rose DEPUY 1765/6-1841

Your information on the Alexanders in Frederick is highly suspicious if taken from a l888 source. First, Frederick County was not formed until l748,so birth (if FrederickTown) would have been in Prince George's County. Second, there are very few church records (except German Lutheran) before l790. If Catholic likely no records are available.
Turn of the century county and family biographies and histories are anecdotal, based on "family myths" and scrambled facts. Often times a group of "brothers" was used to explain same-name contemporaries, without any basis.
Frederick County records -No Patrick Alexander found in the earliest land records for the county nor in the earliest court records. No Alexanders took required Oath of Fidelity in l778.

There was a Nathaniel Alexander practicing law in Fredericktowne in 1750. In the 1800 census, Jacob and wife were over 45. George and Henry were between 26 and 45. In the Frederick Co. Militia of 1812 were George, Henry, Jacob, Jacob Jr., Michael G., Robertson, and Valentine.
