Dear distant cousins,
Maybanks is an unusual name (with or without the s) and there seems to be a family pattern of sons being disowned (strong willed and unforgiving, these maybankses). I have some information on the British branches where I assume we all originated, if you are interested. My father-in-law was Stanley Harry, and his father was Fred - there are still lots of relatives in Reading and Wales.
Anne Maybanks,
Canberra, Australia.

I am looking for Maybank family members in England/Scotland. I wanted to know if the family belonged to a clan and if so, do they have a tartan?

Maybanks in England and Scotland

I was born in England and now live in the Highlands of Scotland. I have traced my family back to 1690. For 200 years they lived in Deptford, Kent (now London). There is no clan/sept tartan for the Maybanks - you will have to look to a female connection for one. My grandmother was a Wright, a sept of the MacIntyres of Glen Orchy, and I wear that tartan. Mention has been made of wild Maybanks. My great grandfather, Joseph Edward Maybank b.1842, was an engineering officer in the merchant marine and murdered a man in Hamburg. One of his sons, Alfred b.1878, also an engineering officer, emigrated to the USA and made his money as a "rum-runner" during prohibition. I met him in 1951. I'm a fairly peaceable fellow myself!

Hey. Just saw your note on internet. My mother was Roberta Maybank from Charleston, S.C. Daughter of Burnet and Elizabeth. I have a daughter in Townesville. She has been there since 7/01 aand will leave in 2 weeks. Are you near there? (Also have a brother that clearly fits your description of Maybank males! However, the actual Maybank men, this generation, are honorable in my experience.) Have a great day!

I don't think the man we're looking for is a direct one of your mothers. But could be of Burnett Maybank. Now see our Harry Maybank was born around 1885. Now there was a Sen. Burnett Maybank that died and Harry was listening to the radio and he just reached over and turned it off. When asked if he was a relative he said no. But was very sad the rest of day, so the story goes. Now Harry was 42yrs old when he married his second wife Ella.(our mother) We do know from his army records he was married before to Anna ???? He never talked about his lst wife. We didn't even know he was married before until after his death. He died in 1956.
Any help to find Harry's family would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Judy

I read your posting from last year with great interest!

I have a great grandfather who called himself Charles Coutts Maybank but so far I have had no luck in locating him in the 1901 Census. According to his daughter, my Nan he was born in 1883 in London to James Maybank & he had a sister called Elizabeth.

I'd be so grateful if you could tell me if he appears in your family research, as I have a feeling he may be one of those Maybanks referred to by others on this message board who didn't have very close ties with his family.
