I think I can answer the question in regards to Franklin Pettiford and his wife Lucy Epps, plus a few other details. Both appear in the Guilford Co. , NC 1850 census, listed as in the "Southern Division". From there, I found them listed in the 1860 Federal Census under Frank Pettiford, having moved to District 10, Hawkins, Tenn. (served by the Rogersville Post Office.) His family: Frank (day laborer) age 36, Lucy age 35, children: Eliza age 7, John H. age 6, Thomas H. age 5, Alphis age 3, Ellen age 8 months. Also living with them is Susan E. Pettiford age 19, and Richard Fitts, a laborer, aged 50.
On this same census page, they live very near to Thomas Y. Epps 23 (Virginia born), Susan E. age 20 (a farm hand born in TN), Lucinda age 1, and Isaac age 4 mos.
Also nearby is Peter Epps age 25, a farmhand born in NC, Sarah Epps age 19, born in VA, and Archie age 3 months, born in TN. These and the above groups are likely related to Lucy Epps who is married to Frank Pettiford.
I know that Thomas H. (or K.) Pettiford, born 29, May, 1856 died 20 Jan, 1925. He was buried the following day. Thomas also has his birthplace as NC, so he and his parents probably had not yet moved to TN. I believe he was buried in Johnson Co. Illinois at the Murrie family cemetery near Vienna, Illinois. I will have to confirm that.
What follows is a partial listing of descendency, without citations, as this is still a work in progress, and right now, most of what I have is verbal from family members. It is, however fairly solid.
Thomas H. Pettiford was father to
Ollie Jane Pettiford, born March 27, 1881.
Ollie Jane married Charles W. Murrie.
Charles W. Murrie was born June 4, 1878, and died Jan 14, 1943.
Ollie Jane had siblings:
Ella, who married Alpha Gray
Effie, who remained single
India, who married Frank Simpson.
I may have this wrong, because my notes were really hastily written, but I think Charles W. Murrie and Ollie Jane Pettiford were parents to:
Jefferson Monroe Murrie
Jefferson Monroe Murrie married Emily Elvira West
I know there is a lot of confirming data missing here, but I will be working on and off to fill in the dates and data points. I'm also working backward as well, so very early information is highly desired.
Hope this helps,
Mary Lynn J.
