Rowland Joseph Bass of Steelville, Missouri was born January 17, 1909 at Steelville, Missouri, a son of the late Claude and Pearl (Stafford) Bass and passed away April 8, 1985 at Rolla Regional Medical Center at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 22 days.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and L.L. Bass.

On September 22, 1936 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Rowland was united in marriage to Priscilla Franklin and to this union, two sons and two daughters were born.

Rowland owned and operated the Bass Mercantile Store for approximately thirty years before his retirement. The store had been owned and operated by his father, and grandfather before him. He was active in community and civic affairs, a Boy Scout leader and past president of Steelville Booster Club, which is now the Steelville Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a fifty year member of Masonic Lebanon Lodge No. 77. He attended Westminster College at Fulton, Missouri, the class of 1933 and was honored as a fifty year member of Kappa Alpa Fraternity in 1975. He was a horticulturist and was known for his lovely flowers, beautiful yard, also he was characterized as being a generous, kind and helpful person.

Those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Priscilla Bass, two sons, Phil and wife Kathleen Bass, Robert F. and wife Agnes Bass, all of Steelville, Missouri; two daughters, Mary and husband Jack Witners of Kansas City, Missouri and Priscilla and husband John Timmberberg of St,. Louis, Missouri; a twin sister, Rowena Bass Cole of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one sister-in-law, Jean Martin Bass. Eight grandchildren and six step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends who remember him as a loving, husband, a devoted father, grandfather and friend.

Memorial services were held 1:30 P.M. Friday, April 12, 1985 at First Baptist Church of Steelvillle, Missouri with the Pastor, Rev. George Ormsbee officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Bros. Funeral Home of Steelville, Missouri.
