Alfred Baxley, 84, died Saturday, May 25, 2013 in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. Baxley was born May 3, 1929 in Appling County to the late Estell Baxley and the late Bertha Buchans Baxley. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church where he was Father of the Year in 2011. Alfred was the grand marshal for the ACHS Homecoming Parade 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Carter Baxley and two brothers, Colquitt Baxley and Willie Baxley, Sr.

Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Linam, Letitia and Mike Smith, Freda B. Brewer, Tonileia and Kenneth Owens and Joy and Donnie Rowland; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Tammy Baxley and Joe and Missy Baxley; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 28 from Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Conger officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Shayne Smith, Preston Baxley, Justin Baxley, Trent Thift, Joseph Kauger and Adam Kauger.

Honorary pallbearers were Adult Sunday school class of Faith Baptist Church and co-workers and student body of Appling County High School.

Musical selections were rendered by David Williams and Terrance Gibson.

Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

James D. Beckworth, 78, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2013 at his residence after a brief illness under the care of Hospice of South Georgia. He was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County. He was a retired farmer; an Ironworker; a member of the Local Union #597 in Jacksonville and a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Brodston Beckworh; his parents, Doc and Agnus Beckworth; one sister and three brothers.

Survivors are his three children, Wendell Beckworth and wife, Carol of Nashville, TN, Margie Clotfelter and husband, Bob of Baxley and Becky Wright and husband, Brad of Baxley; nine grandchildren, Sadie, Shelley, Tony, Joshua, Jeremiah, Jared, Jessica, Angelisa and Dustin; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Beckworth of Baxley and Hoyt Beckworth and wife, Ethel of Baxley; several nieces, nephews and other family also survive.

Visitation was held Tuesday, May 28, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Miles-Nobles Chapel with the Reverend Jerry Rogers, Reverend Brad Park, Reverend Thad Harvey and Reverend Charles Coss officiating. Interment followed in Beckworth-Swinson Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Rusty Beckworth, Ricky Beckworth, Sam Beckworth, Deran Beckworth, Joe Oxendine and Duane Mabry.

Honorary pallbearers were the Huddle House staff and Local Union #597 Ironworkers.

Merl S. Coe, of Meridian, formerly of St. Marys, peacefully slipped into the arms of her heavenly father on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Hospice of the Golden Isles, Brunswick.

Merl was born in Baxley to the late W.H. and Lois Sellers on November 25, 1926. She received her Christian training from her family and Zion Baptist Church in Baxley. Merl shared her life as a wife to Curtis Coe for almost 65 years. Merl was much more than a housewife and loving mother; she also owned a fabric shop in St. Mary’s and was extremely talented in all types of crafts and sewing. She was delighted in sharing her crafts with others, as a ministry and loved by all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband: Curtis Coe of Meridian; daughters: Hilda Brazell, Pat Rowell (Mike) and her son: Randy Coe (Myra); her grandchildren: Chuck Brazell, Chris Brazell, Tisha Rowell, Valarie Cook (Jeremy) and Ashley Corning (Tim); her great grandchildren: Noah and Elora Corning; her brother: William Holt Sellers (Nova Deen); her sister-in-law: Wynette Sellers and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings: Louise Knight, Hazel Malone, Dwayne Sellers, Wade Sellers and William Doris Sellers.

The family received friends on Monday, May 27, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. Her Celebration of Life Service was at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Williamson officiating. Burial followed at Zion Cemetery in Baxley.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Hospice of the Golden Isles, Brunswick. Arrangements were under the direction of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, www.edomillerandsons.com.

Ronnie “Bo Cefus” Courson, 58, of Hazlehurst, died Saturday, May 25, 2013 at his residence. Courson was born Aug. 25, 1954 in Tampa, FL to the late James Leon Courson and the late Evelyn Irene Creamer Courson. He had resided in Jeff Davis County for the past 30 years and was employed with Williams Brothers Trucking. Ronnie was preceded in death by his sister, Eve Beth Courson and a brother, James Tommy Courson.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Kristie (Richard McKinney) Griffin and Tara (Ryan) Thompson, all of Hazlehurst; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald Leon (Misty) Courson, Jr. and Billy James (Lindsey Driggers) Courson of Baxley; two brothers, Danny Courson of Hazlehurst and Dewayne Courson of Augusta; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 29 from Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Rowell officiating. Interment followed in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Dennis Carter, Greg Toler, Wade Watts, Jeff Johns, James Hughes and Lance Partin.

Honorary pallbearers were all his Williams Brothers Trucking co-workers.

Musical selections were rendered by April Johns.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home of Hazlehurst.

Services for Robert Avery Hill, 92, of Dublin, were held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church of Dublin. Graveside services followed in Alamo Cemetery in Alamo. Dr. Jack Key and the Rev. Thad Haygood officiated. Hill passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2013.

Hill was born in Wheeler County on April 10, 1921. He was president of Wheeler County Future Farmers of America as well as the state vice president. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia. Hill also served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1957-1958 for Wheeler County. He farmed for many years and was the owner of the stockyard in Hawkinsville. Later, he worked with the Farmers Home Administration before entering into Real Estate Sales and Appraisals first in Baxley, and then in Dublin, where he later retired. He served as the president of the Lions Club in Baxley, the Altamaha Basin Board of Realtors, Appling County Chamber of Commerce as well as a member of the Rotary Club and served as the president of the Dublin Board of Realtors. Hill was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dublin where he was an active member of his Sunday school class.

Hill was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Sanders Hill; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hill and his brother, Hugh Hill of Perry.

He is survived by a son, Gene Hill (Lisa) of Bainbridge; daughter, Jayne Johnson (Wendell) of Baxley; granddaughters, Gena Hill, Robyn Rathel and Jamie Jones; six great-grandchildren; his sister, Frances Dorris (Glenn) of Marietta, and many nieces and nephews and his adopted family, Margaret Gay, David and Jo Ann Gay, Jennifer and Justin Veal.

Pallbearers were Brett Jones, Wayne Maddox, Bill Doris, Bob Doris, Justin Veal and Miller Massey.

The family received friends on Friday, May 31, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home in Dublin.

Johnny Holder, 63, passed away May 22, 2013 at her residence after an extended illness under the care of Southern Care Hospice. She was a native of Appling County and had lived there most of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Louise Baxley and a brother, Buddy Baxley.

Survivors include three daughters, Angel Hopkins, and husband, AL of Rector, AR, Cindy Burleson, and husband, Mark of Hoxie, AR and Tracie Wiggins and fiancé, Gary Overstreet of Baxley; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, James Crosby of Baxley and Bobby Crosby of North Carolina; several nieces, nephews and other family members also survive.

Visitation was held Saturday, May 25, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Funeral service was held Sunday, May, 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Miles-Nobles Chapel with Reverend Billy Garner officiating.

Virginia Sellers, 82, died Monday, May 27, 2013. Mrs. Sellers was born Jan. 17, 1931 in Appling County to the late Herman Webb and the late Vuena Nail Webb. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church where she served as pianist for forty-four years. Virginia was a member of the Eastern Star for fifty years and was the World’s Greatest Grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Warren Sellers of Baxley; one son and daughter-in-law, Billy Wayne and Linda Sellers of Baxley; two sisters, Lovena Tramell of Forsyth and Bonnie Kilian of Leesburg, FL; three brothers, James Webb of Hiawassee, Joseph Webb of Ball Ground and Don Webb of Baxley; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Virginia Sellers were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 30 at Midway Baptist Church with the Reverends Wayne Williamson, Michael Beecher and Marty Anderson officiating. Interment followed in church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Harry Webb, Sonny Trammell, Jimmy Webb, Don Mark Webb, Davy Webb, Jason Sellers and Kasey Kersey.

Honorary pallbearers were Ladies Sunday School Class of Midway Baptist Church, Sandy Carter Sapp, Robin Mixon, Mary Wallace, Francine Youngblood, Misty Hall, Elizabeth Ahl, Tara Carter, JoAnn Beecher, Mary Burns, Emma Branch and the staff of the Pavilion.

Nancy Harvard Webb
(June 22, 1938 - May 23, 2013)

Nancy Harvard Webb, age 74, of McDonough, passed away, May 23, 2013. She was a teacher at West Clayton Elementary School for 32 years and a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro since 1981.

She was preceded in death by her husband; David Herman Webb Jr. of Baxley.

She is survived by her children; Leigh Anne (Buzz) Hanie, David Taylor (Cristina) Webb, brother; George Henderson, grandchildren; Kent Hanie, Lydia Hanie, Jorge Borras, Fernando Borras and J.C. Borras.

Wynell White Youmans, 91, died Monday, May 27, 2013 in Appling HealthCare System. Mrs. Youmans was born Aug. 17, 1921 in Appling County to the late Wesley White and the late Fannie Dunn White. She was a member of Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Youmans was a member of several garden clubs and noted for her beautiful rose gardens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Youmans and several sisters and brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Carter of Baxley; two sons, Ronald Youmans and Dwight Youmans, both of Baxley; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a special friend, Donna Gore.

Funeral services for Wynell Youmans were held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 30 at Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Tommy Daniels and Bill Vansant officiating. Interment followed in Ten Mile Extension Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jason Youmans, Brenden Youmans, Kevin Youmans, Yancy Carter, Heath Carter and Laney Carter.

J. George Burkhalter, age 36, of Mt. Vernon, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013 in Pierce County. He was a native of Wheeler County and lived in Glenwood and Mt. Vernon all of his life. He was a truck driver, but was a drywall installer most of his life.

Burkhalter is survived by one son, Jacob “Cane” Burkhalter of Soperton; his father, Herman Burkhalter of Baxley; his mother Janice Harper and Tony of Higgston; one sister, Anita Williamson and Mitch and their daughters, Harley and Cassie, all of Vidalia; one step-sister, Christy Brinson of Soperton; two step-brothers, Tony Harper, Jr. of Vidalia and Shawn Harper of Soperton; a special friend, Patrice Herrin and her daughter Taylor; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

The funeral service was held Saturday, June 1, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Buddy Griner and the Reverend Michael Smith officiating. Burial followed in Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Wheeler County.

Pallbearers were Anthony Carey, Nathan Burkhalter, Jim Curry, Michael Chambers, Jr., Michael Gillis and Tony Harper, Jr.

Lawton Edgar Evans, 84, passed away on May 31, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

He was born on January 17, 1929 in Baxley and was a lifelong resident of Savannah. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Evans.

Survivors include his daughters, Terry (Jimmy) Spivey of Savannah, Linda Evans of Bloomingdale, Donna (Terry) Smith of Ellabell, Tina Evans of Bloomingdale and Sandra (Allan) McDonald of Savannah; one sister and one brother; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The memorial service was on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Southside Assembly of God located at 401 Tibet Avenue in Savannah.

James Franklin Hattrich, 66, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Appling Healthcare System. James was born April 21, 1947 in Savannah to the late Henry Franklin Hattrich and the late Evelyn Merle Griner Hattrich. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in Vietnam and was retired from Gulfstream. Hattrich was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Gail Sellers Hattrich of Baxley; one daughter, Erin Brewer Wood of Thomasville; one sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Andy Daughtry of Valdosta; one brother, Charlie Hattrich of Bloomingdale; one grandson, Austin Crosby and a nephew Dillion Hattrich.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 7 at Swain Funeral Home with the Reverends Phillip Osteen and Roger La Roche officiating. Eulogies were given by Erin Wood and Dillion Hattrich. Interment followed in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.

On Friday, May 24, 2013 angels were dispatched from Heaven to bring a loved one home to suffer no more. Miss Ashley Denise Jones transitioned from earth to glory at the Appling Healthcare System in Baxley. Ashley was born in Baxley (Appling County) on August 16, 1986 to Verdell Hood and attended the Appling County School System.

Ashley was preceded in death by her grandparents, Laura Mae Hood, Roosevelt Hood, Sr., Evangelist Imogene Crayton and one aunt, Marsha Crayton.

Survivors include her loving son, Amarion Jones; parents, Verdell Hood Teasley (Gerron), Bobby Joe Crayton (Karon) and Joe A. Jones (Allison); sisters, Shonda Hood, Alexis Jones, Josephine Jones, Nora Baker, Bridgett Carter, April Hayes, Eva Mae Harmon (Joe) and Tina Hayes; brothers, Gerron T. Crayton (Gina), Joseph Jones, Bobby Coley, Bobby Crayton, Jr., Robert T. Honorary pallbearer was Sanjanetta Teasley.

Ronald T. Sheffield, 49, of Monee, Illinois, passed away on May 31, 2013.

Preceded in death was his beloved wife, Gabriella “Gilda” in 2005.

Dear son to the late James and late Patricia (Bush) Sheffield. Loving brother to Cynthia Holcombe, Carolyn Akridge, Sandra Rowell, Deborah Sheffield and the late James Sheffield, Jr. (1961). Dear uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Ronald worked at M.A. Steel as an Iron Worker.

The visitation was on Thursday, June 6, from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at 7:00 p.m. at Monee Funeral Home. The interment was held in private.

Robert Lee Swint, Jr., 81, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, died Thursday, June 6, 2013 in West Palm Beach, FL. Swint was born July 17, 1931 in Augusta to the late Robert Lee and Rosa Barksdale Swint. He was a member of Lake Park Baptist Church. Swint was a veteran of the United States Army with 21 years of service. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Army Commendation. He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Swint and a grandson, John Thomas Peterson.

Survivors include his daughter, Lisa Peterson of Juno Beach, FL; two sons, Robert Alan Swint of North Palm Beach, FL and Richard Lee Swint of Port Saint Lucie, FL; four sisters, Barbara Harsh, Carolyn Gaddis, Shirley White and Donna Kay Pottile; two brothers, Edward Swint and Tommy Swint; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 9 at the Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Deen officiating. Interment followed in Deen Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Danny Smith, Dale Smith, Jeremy Smith, Mike Smith, Bobby Edenfield and Thomas Swint, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were nurses, doctors and staff of the veterans’ hospital in West Palm Beach, FL.

Joshua Lucas Varnadore, 33, of Atlanta, died Thursday, May 30, 2013 in Atlanta. Josh was born Jan. 28, 1980 in Ware County and had lived in Fulton County for the past 14 years. He served as the Pirate Mascot 1997, and was a member of ACCHS Chorus and Show Choir and Cobb County Show Choir. Josh lived his life passionately, loved his God, family and friends and never knew a stranger. He always found the good in every person he met, and was an encourager, with a big smile and a loud and infectious laugh. Josh strived to make a difference and he did. He was the richest man we have known. Joshua was preceded in death by a maternal uncle, Dent Nelson.

Survivors include his mother, Elesa Nelson Varnadore of Baxley; his father, Roger Ezra Varnadore of Vidalia; one sister and brother-in-law, Christy and Luke Schuster of Douglasville and one brother, Caleb Varnadore.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 4 at the First Baptist Church. Interment followed in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 5 at 1539 Bethesda Church Road, Carrollton, Georgia 30117.

Dr. Tommy Jordan and the Rev. Keith Alderman officiated. Eulogy was given by Ezra Varnadore.

Active pallbearers were Eric Roberts Farrar, Jayson Powell, Rafael Williams, Luke Schuster, Caleb Varnadore, Zeth Thomas and Jonathan Law.

Honorary pallbearers were Blake Cohen, Austin Cohen, ACHS Class of 1998, and the staff of La Campagnola Restaurant.

Joy Johnson Kopp, 82, of Flowery Branch, ended her long goodbye on June 11, 2013. Since retirement, she and her husband, of 62 years, Robert, had lived at the family’s log home on Lake Lanier among all their good ole stuff. Joy was the only child of the late Lt. Colonel James Ellis Johnson and Cornelia Parker Johnson Reeves growing up in Baxley surrounded by a large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Home was across from the public school, gym and ball park accommodating many activities. She loved to relive experiences. Among her favorite was the family visitation on her grandmother’s porch fronting on Main Street (U.S. 1) speaking and waving to people and motorists. Joy graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon where she met her husband, Robert (Bob) Kopp who was a student at Mercer. After five years in the business world, she opted to be a full time mom, homemaker, and helpmate for her husband’s career. She lived up to her name as a Life’s Blessing to her family. She loved the traditions of the Old South showing them
in her mannerisms. Joy enjoyed reading, shopping, decorating and cross-stitch, which adorned her home. Raised a Methodist, she joined her husband as a member of Ivy Creek Baptist Church in Buford.

In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by cousins, Lewis and Bill Parker of Baxley, Marianne McMillan of Vidalia, Jimmy Harrell of Clayton, N.C. and Mike Parker of Savannah and other kin.

A celebration of her life service was held Saturday, June 15 at 1:30 p.m. at Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford with visitation one hour before and after the service. Dr. Jim Ferguson and the Rev. Craig Dale officiated. Interment followed at Omega Cemetery in Baxley where she completed life’s earthly journey among family and friends.

Faye Spillman Potter, 78, of Vidalia, died Sunday, June 9, 2013 in the Community Hospice House after a brief illness. She was a native of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and as a child, grew up in Ft. Myers, Florida. She lived in Baxley and Vidalia most of her life. She managed several convenient stores and retired from Magic Market.

She was Baptist by faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Potter, Sr.; son Arthur Potter, Jr.; parents, Burley and Edna Spillman; granddaughter, Kimberly Potter; and two brothers, Pat Spillman and Bob Spillman.

Mrs. Potter is survived by one son, Lloyd S. Potter and wife, Robin, of Eastman; one daughter, Anna Claxton of Vidalia; eleven grandchildren, J.D., Joe and Maranda, Christy and Steven, Jonathan and Leisa, Billy and Denise, Megan and Ian, Amber and Trey, Christopher, Shane, Amanda and Zack; twelve great-grandchildren, nephew, Chris Spillman and Jackie of Mt. Vernon, and several other nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, June 12, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Carter officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery in Appling County.

Pallbearers were Joe Potter, Jonathan Potter, Billy Johns, Chris Spillman, Ricky Simmons, and Tony Banks.

Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home of Vidalia was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Lee Spratling, 59, died Friday, June 7, 2013 at his residence. Thomas was born July 17, 1953 in Waynesboro to the late Lewis Lamar Spratling and Ella Idell Rentz Spratling. He was a member of Memorial Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his son, Lee Spratling of Baxley.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 10 at Memorial Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Karl Sexton officiating. Interment followed in church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Mark Carter, Ronald Carter, Chris Rentz, Kenny Rentz, Terry Rentz and Barry Moon.

Honorary pallbearers were Lucille Perry, Vanzel and Gail Perry, Howard and Donna Poe, James Rentz, Charles and Shirley Smith, Eula Paige, Margaret Bargeron, Blake Carter and Brent Carter.

Charles H. (Mike) Parker III, 67, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 20, 2013. Mike was born on Oct. 1, 1945 and spent most of his early life in Baxley where he met his wife, Brenda, and married on Sept. 11, 1971 at Zoar Baptist Church. Mike was a graduate of Appling County High School and Georgia Southern University. He went on to have a successful career in the finance industry in Savannah where he and Brenda built a wonderful life around their family, church, friends and music. Southern Gospel Music was a cornerstone of Mike’s life from the age of 5 when he started playing the piano. He went on to sing with the Southern Gospel Quartet – The Lordsmen – and was a long-time choir member of Windsor Forest Baptist Church.

His parents, Charles H. Parker, Jr. and Katherine Parker, preceded him in death. Surviving loved ones include his loving wife, Brenda; his two beloved cats, Smokey and Oscar; his no. 1 niece, Mandy Johnson Schmid; nephews, Ryan Johnson and Charlie Newman; Mary Ann Harrell McMillan who was more like a sister than a cousin, and numerous other extended family members.

Mike will be deeply missed throughout the community where he was an active member of Windsor Forest Baptist Church, a member of the Christian Business Men’s Connection and a board member of Southside YMCA. His bright intellect, sense of humor, endless jokes and contagious laugh will be missed.

Jessie Leah Hall Pearson, age 89, of Hazlehurst, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Lumber City Health and Rehab.

Mrs. Pearson was born January 4, 1924 in Appling County to the late Elam Hall and the late Sophie Ogden Hall. She was the co-owner of H and H Office Supply, a member of Satilla Free Will Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Melvin Pearson, Sr., sister, Juanita Tillman and brothers, Cecil Hall and Estus Hall.

Survivors include her daughter, Gwen Pearson of Hazlehurst; son, Mel (DeLaine) Pearson, Jr. of Camden, SC; brothers, Jack Hall of Sapulpa, OK and Vernard Hall of Brunswick; grandchildren, Lt. Jeff (Megan) Pearson, Wendy (Scott) Brinley, and Lauren (Zach) Hoffman; great-grandchildren, Garrett Pearson, Landon Pearson, and Ava Brinley and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held Friday, June 14, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Satilla Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Neal Helmey, Harold Tillman, Randall Hall, James Mincey, Eddie Simmons and Zach Hoffman.

Musical selections were rendered by the “Satilla 5”.

Brown Funeral Home announces the funeral service for Joyce Gibbs Smith who passed away on June 13, 2013. The homegoing celebration was held Sunday, June 16 at Second Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Surrency with the Rev. E. Jones presiding. Interment followed in Surrency Grove Cemetery.

Ms. Smith was born Aug. 14, 1952 to the late Albert Lee Harris and Zola Mae Gibbs. She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Lee Harris and her daughter, Sabrina King and sister, Agnes Ellis.
Joyce received her education in the Appling County School System and joined Second Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She was employed by the Appling County Board of Education for many years as a custodian.

Survivors include her mother, Zola Mae Gibbs; one sister, Shirley Alderman of Baxley; five brothers, Norris Gibbs, Lett (Gloria) Harris, Alfred Sumner, all of Baxley, Albert Lee (Angela) Harris and Mitchell (Frances) Burke, both of Atlanta; aunts, Floretta King and Flossie White of Surrency and Ella Bert (Carl) Marion of Alma; uncles, Dewitt Gibbs of Baxley, Willie Cromartie of Lakeland, FL and Edon Cromartie of Columbus; a special friend, Mattie Nails of Baxley; and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.

Active pallbearers were Dewayne White, Marcus Gibbs, Stanley Gibbs, Lothair White, Mike Gibbs and Paul Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers were friends.

Musical selections were rendered by Carletha Wright, the Rev. Sherwood Gibbs, Kathy Gibbs and the Rev. E. Jones.

Willie "Mann" Brannan
(April 10, 1963 - June 22, 2013)
Willie “Mann” Brannan, age 50, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013 at his residence under the care of Southern Care Hospice after an extended illness.
He was a native of Toombs County living the past 15 years in Appling County. Willie was a member of the Baxley First United Methodist Church and also a member of the Praise Team; enjoyed fishing and playing music and loved his family very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Juanita Tootle Brannan; one daughter, Linda Marie Stapleton; two brothers, Robert Willie Brannan and Fred Rosco Brannan; two sisters, Geneva Rountree Phillips and Nellie Dean Fish.
Surviving is his wife, Kathy Rich Brannan of Baxley; three daughters, Hannah and Rocky Lynn, Christie and John Smith and Amber “Tootie” Rich all of Baxley; adopted children, Robert and Amanda Phelps, Jonathan Vasquez and Amy Rich; adopted mother, Marie Brunner and husband Charlie; two sisters, Betty Phelps and Melina Englett both of Baxley; three brothers, James and Sue Brannan and Norman Brannan both of Baxley and William Brannan of Jacksonville, FL; nine grandchildren, Espen Smith, Olivia Smith, Jahalynn Lynn, Jarrod Lynn, Jonathan Smith, April Herrington, Ashton Smith, Devin Herrington and Dylan Lynn; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Baxley - Shirley Holton Griffin, 59, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013 at the Medical College of Georgia. She was a native of Coffee County, GA and had lived the past 39 years in Appling County. She was a Certified Nurse’s Assistant for 15 year at Appling Healthcare Systems and a member of Harvest Temple Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents; EZ and Mary Viola Holton; three brothers, Allen Bryant, Ronnie Cothern and Billy Stapleton and a daughter in-law, Kim Griffin.
Survivors are her husband of 39 years, Joel Glenn Griffin; two daughters and sons in-law, Shauna and Randy Rowell of Hazlehurst and Renee and Brad Thompson of Alma; two sons, Joe Holton and Jason Griffin both of Baxley; two sisters, Jurrell Dukes of Hazlehurst and Willene Reed of Pensacola, FL; one brother, J.T. Bryant of Hazlehurst; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild and several nieces, nephews and other family also survive.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2013 from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
