Basque: Castilianized variant of Basque Bergara, a
habitational name from places so called (earlier Virgara) in
the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Navarre. The place name is of uncertain
derivation; the second element is gara ‘hill’, ‘height’,
‘eminence’, but the first has not been satisfactorily identified.
