Polish Czech Slovak Sorbian German (of Slavic origin) and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): from Polish Czech Slovak and Lower Sorbian kalina ‘guelder rose snowball tree (Viburnum opulus)’. As a Slavic name it is probably topographic; as a Jewish name it is more likely artificial. Polish and Czech: from the personal name Kalina a derivative of various personal names in particular Latin Calixtus (see Kalista ) or Aquilinus (see Aquilino ). Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): habitational name from a place called Kalina or Kalino.
