German: from a diminutive of Rube (1 or ). German (Rübel): metonymic occupational name from a diminutive of Middle High German ruobe (from Latin rapum) ‘turnip beet oilseed rape’ grown for use as a fodder crop or in the case of rape for the oil obtained from its seeds. Germanized form of Sorbian Wrobel Wrobl or Robel 1 and of Polish Wróbel all meaning ‘sparrow’. East German: possibly also a nickname of Slavic origin for a big heavy crude man derived from the Polish dialect adjective ruby ‘coarse rude crude’ or some other Slavic cognate (Old Sorbian gruby Upper Sorbian hruby Czech hrubý).
