claimed by bearers in England as indicating descent from the family famous at the Byzantine court at least as early as the 12th century named Raoul (see Rawle ) later known as Ralles. It was most conspicuous in 19th-century England as the name of five merchant brothers whose ancestors came from Chios Greece.
