Kegel Family History
Kegel Name Meaning
German and Dutch: from Middle High German and Middle Dutch kegel ‘skittle pin’ hence a nickname for an inveterate skittles or bowls player. The term also denoted an illegitimate child (hence the phrase (still current) mit Kind und Kegel ‘with all the family’); in Early New High German (15th century) took on the meaning ‘uncouth person’. Slovenian: nickname from kegelj ‘skittle pin’ a word of German origin (see 1 above). In North America this surname may also be an altered form of the variant Kegelj and possibly also Kegl.
