Italian (southern mainly Caserta): from a personal name based on classical Greek Kassandra the name of a mythological prophet daughter of the king of Troy which is often associated with a person who predicts misfortune and goes unheard. In Tuscany the term also became a nickname for a corpulent woman under the influence of Italian cassa ‘trunk’ ‘crate’.
