About this collection
This database contains names from lists of Jews deported from the Tîrgu Mureş ghetto in Romania. The lists were compiled by the Judenrat of the ghetto. The original records are held by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Historical Background
Tîrgu Mureş (known as Maros-Vásárhely in Hungarian) is located in northern Transylvania, Romania. The first settled in the town in the 1830s. After World War I, Tîrgu Mureş became part of Romania, however in August 1940, it was transferred back to Hungary. After the Nazi occupation of Hungary in May of 1944, a ghetto was established in the brickyard of Tîrgu Mureş and over 7,500 Jews were concentrated there. The Jews were deported to Auschwitz on the 27th and 30th of May and June 8th, 1944.
