Vital records are a cornerstone of family history research because they were typically created at or near the time of the event, making the record more likely to be accurate. This collection consists of indexes to deaths in the five Boroughs of New York City reported to the Health Department prior to 1949.
Note that the index collection is not complete. The following are the currently available death record indexes:
- Bronx, 1898 - 1948
- Brooklyn, 1862 - 1948
- Manhattan, 1867 -1948
- Queens, 1898 - 1948
- Richmond, 1898 - 1948
Obtaining Copies of the Records Visit the Department of Records/Municipal Archives website, www.nyc.gov/records (click on family history research) for information and instructions on how to view and/or obtain copies of death records identified in the index, and to view a complete list of all extant death records.
The index for this collection is being completed by volunteers and will be updated from time to time.
