Beginning in 1855, the Massachusetts Legislature authorized a state census every ten years. Only two of those censuses survive: 1855 and 1865. This database contains the 1865 Massachusetts state census. Census day was 1 June, though enumerations took much longer than one day to complete. The forms may include the following details:
- marital status
Names on the census are grouped by household, but no head of household or relationship to a head of household are indicated.
