About Appletons' Cyclopedia of American Biography, 1600-1889
Appletons' Cyclopedia of American Biography is a series of volumes of biographies of famous Americans in the United States. The series spanned multiple decades, and contained entries from most states. It contains more than 15,000 entries. Much of the information found within was compiled by either the subjects themselves or by their families. This collection contains volumes from the 1887, 1888, and 1889 editions.
What you can find in the records
- Name
- Birth Date and Location
- Death Date and Location
- Occupation
It is worth noting that not all of the biographies found within the Cyclopedia may be accurate. About 200 "suspicious" entries have been flagged to date. Since contributors to the project were paid by space, there is speculation that the authors of the false pieces may have been financially motivated to add fabricated entries.
