About Frankenberg, Germany, Family Registers, 1717-1938

About this collection

This collection contains Family Registers from Frankenberg, Saxony. Frankenberg is a city in the Mittelsachsen district of the German state of Saxony. The city is located in the Saxon Uplands along the Zschopau River about 10 miles northeast of Chemnitz. It takes its name from a 12th century Frankish settlement. The St. Aegidien church in the historic city center is a notable landmark. During the time period of this collection, from 1806 until 1918, Frankenberg belonged to the Kingdom of Saxony.

The Frankenberg City Archive refers to the Family Registers as the "Old Registration Cards" (Alte Meldekartei). They were created by Max Kästner, a local historian, teacher and museum director. The entries are based on original documents. Much of the information was extracted from parish records that were available at the time. A few of those entries date as far back as 1646.
