Montana became a territory in 1864 and a state in 1889. In 1895, the state began requiring clergy, doctors, undertakers and those in similar professions to registers deaths, with statewide death registration starting in 1907. This database is an index to deaths that took place within the territory or state between 1907 and 2018. Occasionally, older death records may be found, dating back to 1868. Details in this index may include the full name of the deceased and the date and place of death. A copy of the actual death certificate may be ordered from the Office of Vital Statistics.
Note: This database was updated in March 2013 with improved data supplied by the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services. Previous versions of the Montana Death Index contained data errors that have been corrected by the state in this update.
