About District of Columbia, U.S., Compiled Marriages, 1826-1850

Congress created the District of Columbia as the seat of the federal government on 16 July 1790, although the federal government did not relocate to that area until 1801. The area now known as Washington, DC was carved from Fairfax County, Virginia (created in 1742) and from parts of Prince George's (created in 1695) and Montgomery (created in 1776) counties, Maryland. The area taken from Virginia was returned to that state in 1846. This database contains a record of marriages that took place in the District of Columbia between 1826 and 1850. Researchers will find names of both the bride and groom and the date of the marriage.
