This collection was compiled by and is located at the Delaware Public Archives. It was created in part to provide marriage information for years prior to when the Office of Vital Statistics started collecting it. Records contained in the collection include:
- Marriage bonds
- Marriage certificates
- Marriage returns
- Governor’s authorization for marriage
- Certification by Justices of the Peace for marriage
- Church records
- Family bibles
Information contained in this database includes:
- Names of bride and groom
- Ages of bride and groom
- Marriage, bond, or other record date
- Marriage place
Additional information may be available on the original record depending on the record type. For example, marriage bonds may also list the names of bondsmen and the amount of the bond. Other records may include the names of witnesses, places of residence for the bride and groom, parents’ names, and more.
Some marriage records extend over multiple pages. This means you may need to look at multiple images in order to see an entire marriage record. Use the “next” and “previous” buttons in your image viewer to see the pages that appear before and after the image you are taken to from your search results.
