Xuan Wang, the penultimate king (827–781 bc) of the Western Zhou dynasty, granted this area to one of his brothers-in-law, and the latter’s descendants adopted the place name Xie as their surname. Chinese : from the name of Xie City, which existed in present-day Henan province during the Zhou dynasty (1122–221 bc).
