Americanized spelling of German Dürmeyer or Dürrenmayer, a distinguishing name either for a tenant farmer (see Meyer) who sold his produce at a high price (Middle Low German dure ‘dear’, ‘expensive’), or, in the south, a tenant farmer whose farm was by water (Middle High German dur ‘water’ appears in field names).
