English and French: occupational name for a gatherer of tolls exacted for the right of passage across a bridge, ford, or other thoroughfare, from Middle English, Old French travers ‘passage’, ‘crossing’, from Old French traverser ‘to cross’. Northern Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Treabhair (see Trevor).
