Italian (northern): nickname for a youth from toso ‘clean-shaven’ ‘close-cropped’ (from Latin tonsus past participle of tondere ‘to cut or shear’) used also as a personal name. In the later Middle Ages it was in fashion for some time for young men to cut their hair close while their elders preferred a longer style.
