Polish and Ukrainian: nickname for a man of powerful build, from Polish and Ukrainian taran ‘battering ram’. Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic) and Ukrainian: either a nickname from Ukrainian taran ‘pock’, or a metonymic occupational name from another meaning of the same word, ‘tool used in a churn for butter making’.
