Italian: from a short form of the personal name Gaetano, or from pet forms thereof. Spanish (Taño): possibly nickname from taño ‘sucker’, ‘shoot’. Japanese: it is unclear whether instances of this name in America are Tano, meaning ‘many fields’, or Tano, meaning ‘many offerings’. Neither is common in Japan.
