Tobacco was introduced to Europe in the 16th century. Turkish: occupational name for a tanner, Turkish tabak. Dutch: occupational name for a butcher or hog breeder, from Middle Dutch tucbake, from tucken ‘to pull, push, or strike’ + bake ‘hog’.
