North German: variant of Stropp, either a metonymic occupational name for a rope maker from the Low German word for rope, or a nickname for a rascal, the sense it has today. possibly an Americanized form of Dutch Stroop, a nickname for a poacher, from a derivative of the verb stropen ‘to raid’, ‘to plunder’.
