The surname may be topographic for someone who lived by a gap (perhaps in a hedge or fence or in a range of hills) or habitational from a place so named such as Shard End in Castle Bromwich (Warwickshire) the lost Shert Hall in Disley Stanley (Cheshire) and possibly also Shard near Hambleton (Lancashire).
