Indian (northern states): Hindu, Jain, and Parsi name found among several mercantile communities, from se?th ‘merchant’, ‘banker’ in Hindi and neighboring languages (from Sanskrit šre?s?thi, a term denoting the head of a mercantile or other guild). The Khatris of the Panjab have a clan called Seth. Scottish and Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Sithigh or Ó Síthigh (see Sheehy).
