Italian, Portuguese (Sérgio), and Spanish: from the personal name, from Latin Sergius (originally a family name, of uncertain, possibly Etruscan, origin). This was borne by a 4th-century Christian saint martyred in Cappadocia under Diocletian. The personal name was hereditary in the ducal houses of Amalfi and Naples between the 11th and 13th centuries.
