Old High German forms are not found, and the semantic development is not entirely clear. Jewish (Ashkenazic): from German Schimmel ‘mildew’, imposed by a non-Jewish government official. Jewish (Ashkenazic): from a pet form of the personal name Shimon (see Simon).
