German and Dutch: metonymic occupational name for someone who made dishes (for scales) vessels for drinking etc. from Middle Low German Dutch schale ‘dish’. Dutch (Van der Schaal): topographic name for someone living on marshy land from Dutch schald ‘shallow’.
