Slovenian and Croatian: probably from a German (Gottscheerish; see 2 below) shortened and altered form of the Tyrolean ethnic name Payr ‘Bavarian’ either applied as a nickname referring to Gottscheers or imported as a surname. Alternatively perhaps a nickname for a cattle drover or a herder derived from Slovenian pojati ‘to hurry to chase’ in the sense ‘to take cattle to pasture’. Compare Poye . German: shortened and altered form of Tyrolean Payr ‘Bavarian’ (compare Payer ). This is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ) and may alternatively be of Slovenian origin (see 1 above). German: variant of Boje itself a variant of Boye .
