French: from Old French puche ‘purse’, ‘bag’ (of Germanic origin), a metonymic occupational name for a maker of bags and purses, or a nickname for someone who was in the habit of carrying a distinctive bag or purse. In the Middle Ages this was a universal personal accessory, as clothing with pockets was unknown. In the U.S. this name occurs most frequently in LA.
