French and Hungarian (Pintér): occupational name for a maker of measures or for an official who controlled measures, from an agent derivative of Old French pinte, Hungarian pint ‘pint’, of uncertain origin. Pinter is also found as a Dutch surname, probably with the same meaning as in 3 (see Pint).
