French (Normandy): from a medieval personal name, derived from an old name for Palm Sunday, reflecting the liturgical chant of Hosanna used on that day to represent the acclamation of Jesus when he rode into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:8–9). Dutch and German: from a variant of the female personal name Susanna, influenced by the liturgical word hosanna (see 1 and 2).
