In northern England linseed oil obtained from locally grown flax was more common than olive oil. English: from the Continental Germanic personal name Odilard, Oilard, introduced by the Normans. Americanized spelling of German Euler or of Swabian Äuler, a topographic name for someone who lived by a water meadow, Äule, a diminutive of Au.
