The place-name derives from Old English mōr ‘moor’ (genitive mōres) + hēafod ‘head the top of something’. either topographic from Middle English more ‘moor marsh fen’ + side ‘side edge’ or toponymic from any of numerous minor places so called such as Moorside in Follifoot (WR Yorks) and Moreside in Papcastle (Cumb).
